Syria's one million lost children

Carrying their belongings on their backs, Syrians cross into Turkey.

They are among an estimated 2 million refugees -- half of them minors -- who have fled civil war at home.

Another 4.5 million are displaced within Syria, the United Nations reports.

And more continue to seek asylum in neighbouring countries as the region braces for international strikes in retaliation for the suspected use of chemical weapons by government forces.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said any military intervention should be aimed at bringing an end to President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRIME MINISTER TAYYIP ERDOGAN SAYING:

"More than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria," he says. "They are still being killed but where are the Western countries? What have Western countries done for Syria?"
