After meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House, U.S. Senator John McCain said that a vote by the U.S. Congress against Obama's proposal for using military force in Syria would be "catastrophic."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, SAYING:

"We had what I think was a very productive conversation. Both Senator Graham and I are in agreement that now that a resolution is going to be before the Congress of the United States, we want to work to make that resolution something that a majority of members of both Houses can support. A rejection of that -- a vote against that resolution by Congress, I think would be catastrophic because it would undermine the credibility of the United States, and the U.S. president, and none of us want that."

He said the White House still faces a tough sell to congress.

"I think we have found some areas where we can work together, but we have a long way to go."
