Washington, DC Installing Dozens of Additional Enforcement Cameras

Washington, DC is installing dozens of cameras in various parts of the city to catch and ultimately ticket offenders. The new cameras will ticket drivers who run stop signs, fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and block boxes.
Laws around ticket issuing cameras are constantly debated, with some insisting they promote safety, while others believe they are merely revenue driven.
Washington, DC is hoping to install over 130 additional cameras in various parts of the city in the next few months. This new batch of recording devices will significantly add to the number of cameras D.C. has already installed.
The new cameras will ticket drivers who run stop signs, fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and block boxes.
Construction vehicles are also targeted, with cops are planning to set up cameras to catch oversized commercial vehicles cutting through residential neighborhoods.
A Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson stated, “Stop sign units will be placed at locations in the District near schools where flagrant stop sign running is a significant issue.”
Once the new cameras are up and running, the total number of enforcement cameras in the city will more than double.
Apart from providing safety these cameras are a significant source of revenue for the District. Last year, Washington, DC earned $85 million in revenue solely from speed and red light cameras.
