Most people don’t think eating foods made with beer, wine, or liqueur can make them drunk, but it really depends on the type and quantity of alcohol consumed as well as the preparation methods. As one man in Scotland learned, eating and driving can have serious consequences too.

27-year-old Aivis Terps pleaded guilty to driving with two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit after eating a box of chocolate liqueurs at a party.

Police were called to that same party by neighbors complaining about the noise, talked to Terps and others about not driving if they had been drinking, but shortly after recognized his car as he was driving home.

Terps insisted he did not drink anything or realize that the bulb-sized chocolates equivalent to one vodka shot each would cause him to be drunk.

Sheriff Richard McFarlane told Terps, “The source of the alcohol is of no notice or relevance to me…The only positive aspect here is that this offence was detected because of the police vigilance and not because of any accident you caused.”

Terps is required to pay about $700 in fines and cannot drive for 20 months.
