India: female vigilantes to stop sexual crimes
Eight months on from the fatal gang rape of a student that stunned India, last week saw another sexual attack which has sparked nationwide outrage. Last Thursday, a 23 year old photojournalist was attacked and raped by several men whilst she was working on a magazine feature in an exclusive neighbourhood of Mumbai. And with social media buzzing with outrage over these rapes, and discussion on how to stop them, there are now groups of female vigilantes taking their own action.
Like the Gulabi Gang, for example, who wear pink saris: as the organization, which was founded in the northern province of Uttar Pradesh, explains on its webpage, it’s members, all female, are armed with bamboo sticks and will attack violent men when they feel the police aren’t doing anything. The Gulabi gang now reportedly has tens of thousands of members and also campaigns against child marriages, and female illiteracy among the disadvantaged sections of Indian society.
It has inspired other female vigilante groups across India. The Red Brigade for example is comprised of younger girls, and provides self-defense classes in rural areas. Yes, until they feel safe, these women will be taking justice in their own hands.
