During a trip to Southeast Asia Sunday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said U.S. military forces are ready to take action regarding the civil war in Syria should President Obama ask for it.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES DEFENSE SECRETARY, CHUCK HAGEL SAYING:
"President Obama has asked the Defense Department to prepare options for all contingencies. We have done that and we are prepared to exercise whatever option - if he decides to employ one of those options."
On Friday, reports surfaced that U.S. naval forces had repositioned the guided missile destroyer, the U.S.S. Mahan, to the Mediterranean Sea giving Obama the option for an armed strike on Syria, again, should he decide to do so.
But so far, Obama has not made any definitive decisions on military action in Syria.
White House officials say the U.S. is still gathering information on whether the Syrian government used chemical weapons on its civilians in
