Move over United States and Germany – the new biggest spender in the world travel category is China.

They were proclaimed the victors by Hotels.com after the travel website conducted an extensive study into the tourism habits of the country’s citizens.

Over 3000 Chinese international travelers and 1500 hotel managers and owners were surveyed.

The hotels themselves say that Chinese tourists account for about 5 percent of bookings, but that number is expected to rise significantly in the coming years.

As the middle class in China continues to emerge and expand, international travel is becoming increasingly common.

In 2012 83 million tourists traveled abroad and it’s expected that by 2020 200 million will be the annual norm.

Where they’ll go is, of course, yet to be determined.

Many interviewed said that one of their biggest decision-makers is the ease with which they can obtain a visa.

A common criticism from China’s international travelers is how few hotels are set up to accommodate Chinese visitors.

It was recommended that more equip themselves to accept Chinese credit cards and with staff that can speak Mandarin.
