A new study from researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis shows that blood tests might be used as a way to tell if people are suicidal.

The study looked at blood samples from white male subjects who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and samples of blood from nine men who had committed suicide.

The results show that there is a rise in the amount of certain kinds of proteins in subjects that said they had been contemplating suicide, and those who were tested that actually went through with taking their own lives.

Being able to diagnose patients with a blood test would be helpful, because according to the study: “Individuals at risk often choose not to share their ideation or intent with others, for fear of stigma, or that in fact their plans may be thwarted.”

There still has to be more research done on the correlation between suicidal tendencies and the increased presence of certain proteins in the blood, including testing female and nonwhite subjects.

What do you think? Could a blood test be an accurate way to tell if someone is suicidal?
