How do you like the idea of an alcohol pipeline?

During what was described as a routine inspection, Kyrgyz authorities discovered and shut down a vodka smuggling pipeline.

While the term pipeline is often used loosely to describe supply channels in general, in this case it really was one.

Officials found an 8-inch wide tube running across the Chu River, the boundary between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The pipeline was outfitted with a variety of valves and was buried along the bottom of the waterway, about a third of a mile below the surface.

The alcohol, which is believed to have been mostly vodka, was being brought into Kyrgyzstan where people are often on the lookout for bargain-priced liquor.

Kazakhstan is a logical place to source from as the country is a large producer of grain.

It’s estimated that thousands of gallons of illegal – and apparently discounted - alcohol was received in Tokmok, the pipeline’s terminus.

The authorities said they think the activity has been going on for months.

Their investigation hasn’t resulted in any arrests as of yet.
