Photos have surfaced online, depicting people seeking refuge in freezers; usually ones located in public places like convenience stores. The bizarre trend seemed to originate in Japan, when this year’s summer heat became unbearable for many.
It may due to media reports, or a true need to cool off, but more and more pictures are popping up showing people following that fad and they don’t appear to be from Japan. One newly released photo depicts a woman sitting at the bottom of a cooler that appears to be located inside of a store or eatery.
The female from China, claimed the hot weather and inability to afford an air conditioner led to her decision to take a break in the cooler. Even people in parts of the Western world have been captured inside freezers and coolers. In one picture, a person lies face down in a small freezer.
Web users who have seen the photos are concerned about the cleanliness factor as humans are resting next to food products, but also the well-being of those who choose to freezer dive, citing suffocation as a potential problem.
