Visually Dominant Performers Have an Edge in Music Competitions

In classical competitions even though passion is expressed though music, it’s the physical passion performers show that judges seem to relate to most.

Apparently the adage that “seeing is believing” also holds true for classical music competitions.

Even though most musicians are passionate about their craft, a new study suggests it’s the physical passion performers show that judges seem to relate to most.

In the study over 1000 people were randomly given performance samples from various international competitions. Some were audio only, some supplied video with no audio, and some offered both.

Only those who watched the video without the audio were able to accurately pick the eventual winners.

Those who only listened to the audio only didn’t identify the victors with any greater success than those who watched video with sound.

Of the findings the author said, "I wouldn't necessarily say that this is indicative of superficial judgment. There is something about visual information that is better able to convey cues such as passion or involvement or creativity. These elements are very much a part of high-quality performance."

She did, however, offer the caveat that those who are watching and listening to a performance need to be mindful of which they’re doing when.

Further, musicians themselves are advised to be aware of where they’re placing their own emphasis.
