Shortly after the heat-related deaths of 4 inmates in Texas, it came to light that the state’s Department of Criminal Justice has proceeded with plans to build a climate-controlled pig barn.
There are at present no plans to install cooling systems in the prisons, and the only available means of relief are fans placed throughout the facilities.
Air conditioning is only available in medical areas, on death row, and in solitary confinement.
A spokesperson for prisoners’ rights from the Texas Civil Rights Project confirmed that the organization will be litigating the matter as it progresses.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials point out that they don’t have the money to retrofit prisons with air conditioning or cooling systems – the public just isn’t interested in funding that project.
Prison officials also said that they are building what is considered an industry standard structure for the pigs.
Animals raised in it are intended as food for prisoners statewide, and the department asserts that without the cooling and heating system it the food source would be at risk.
