More than 600 migrants have been rescued at sea by the Italian navy and coastguard in the last 24 hours.
More than 200 people were found on an overcrowded vessel close to the southern Italian island of Lampudesa on Tuesday morning.
Another 300, including a newborn baby, were rescued off the Sicilian coastline near Agrigento overnight on Monday.
