Most people go on vacations to have fun, relax, and perhaps experience something new. Unfortunately for 57-year-old Wolfgang Gruelich, his recent trip to Scotland was not as enjoyable as expected, and a memorable first for him involved visiting a jail cell.

A banker from Germany, Gruelich had already visited several areas of Scotland with his partner Irmgard Wiesenberger and her two teenage daughters. One day, after driving several hours and drinking some alcohol, an argument broke out about the food for dinner at the Orchard Cottage in Perthshire. In frustration and without thinking, he recklessly threw a pizza and a pot of pasta.

Though police report he didn’t intend to hit anyone, the pot hit and injured Wiesenberger’s leg. Gruelich was apologetic, cooperated with police, and spent almost 2 days in custody.

Since it was his first offense, police offered him a “gentleman’s agreement” to not speak to his family while in Scotland and fly home on his own. He paid a fine, was released, and checked in to a local hotel until his flight was scheduled to leave. Meanwhile, Wiesenberger drove their car, along with her daughters and all of Gruelich’s belongings, and took the ferry back to Germany.
