The choice of produce in our supermarkets and markets is greater than ever before, but this increase in choice can also make buying a simple apple or banana a confusing exercise.

Many of us are keen to buy fruit and veg that is free from pesticides, environmentally friendly in the way it’s been produced and transported and those who have farmed the produce are given fair prices and decent working conditions.

However it’s easy to be bamboozled about the different terms – organic, fairtrade, ethical produce – what do they actually mean and how can you tell if the produce you’re buying fits the bill?
