In deep financial trouble, the US Postal Service is considering legalizing the shipment of beer and wine, according to the Associated Press. The added business would bring in an estimated 50 million dollars a year.

UPS and FedEx have been delivering it for ages, but a century-old, temperance era law prohibits the postal service from doing the same.

In modern times, however, online beer and wine sales are booming. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe thinks it’s time for the service to get caught up to the present and take advantage of the opportunity.

Some have expressed concern that the move will facilitate minors getting their hands on the stuff, but Donahoe doesn’t see that as an issue since preventative practices could easily be established.

One of the larger logistical concerns is coordinating shipments so state delivery laws aren’t compromised.

For example, while 40 states allow incoming shipments from wineries, only 14 have given clearance for wine coming from out of state retail stores.

Before it can happen, a bill needs to be passed but Donahoe seems hopeful. He even mentioned that he’s already considering 4 and 6 bottle flat rate wine boxes.
