Square has been the venue of several protests during the past few months over a decision by The Turkish Prime Minister Raccipp Tayyip Erdogan to turn the adjacent Gezi park into a shopping mall. The protests were quickly snowballed to a call for the resignation of the Turkish ruling AK Party. The protests this time were in solidarity with one of the victims of the Turkish security's harsh crack down on protesters. Barkin Elvan a 14-year-old boy was hit with a tear gas canister. Elvin's situation is severe because of an infection resulting from the blow. Elvan has been in the hospital for almost 50 days.
