If you find yourself in a legal jam in Afghanistan, the go-to lawyer for the international and underrepresented is Kimberley Motley.
She’s also the only foreign litigator in the country.
Motley originally went to Afghanistan to take part in a mentoring and training program organized by the US State Department.
While she was there she realized that many Westerners were wasting away in jails and prisons for no reason other than that they lacked legal representation.
She offered her services, cleared it with the right Afghani courts and officials, and before long she was taking cases and freeing her incarcerated clients.
Her success rate is reported to be about 90 percent.
Following these victories she expanded her client base to include another of the country’s underrepresented groups– women.
Among them was a 21-year-old who had been raped and imprisoned for adultery as a result. Through her relentless efforts, Motley was able to get the young woman released on a full presidential pardon.
Motley’s triumphs have garnered her worldwide press and applause. Stories about her and her mission have been published throughout the West as well as in Thailand, India, and Pakistan.
