It acts like a run-of-the-mill stomach bug, causing nausea, fatigue, and diarrhea, but a single-celled parasite is actually to blame for the recent outbreak of flu-like symptoms in 8 states.

Called Cyclospora, it’s normally found in more tropical climates like n parts of Latin America. What it’s doing in the US is anybody’s guess.

States reporting the most cases are Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa, but the parasite has also been causing some problems in Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

In total, there have been around 280 patients diagnosed with it, but there are probably many more out there as the parasite is difficult to spot.

Once determined to be the cause of the illness, treatment with antibiotics will typically make it go away. Otherwise, it can hang around for up to two months.

The source remains unknown, but the parasite is believed to be food-borne – it is said to typically prefer produce as a means of transportation.

Doctors say the pesky cell isn’t being spread person-to-person and doesn’t live on hands. Families and groups who are all infected got it because they ate or drank the same thing.
