It all started with comments by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi during an interview, in which he said that he is a "Hindu nationalist." Getting into election mode after his elevation in the BJP as Campaign Committee Chief, Modi also accused the Congress of hiding behind a veil of secularism to cover its failures. Many feel that Modi is trying to build a certain image.
However, BJP said that it wants good governance to be the poll issue and charged the Congress with diverting public attention from its failures by raking up the secularism issue to polarise the electorate.
