A mule, dangerously close to death, in India has been rescued. The animal had been stuck in Uttarakhand, an area which recently encountered heavy flooding, for a total of 27 days.

During that time, the mule was left without any food or water. Local authorities had attempted numerous rescue efforts over the course of several weeks but none were remotely successful.

A civilian pilot decided to take over. The captain along with his team took the aircraft through a dangerous fly zone and landed the helicopter near a river.

Once the mule was located, it was sedated and blindfolded. The crew carried the mule back to safety from inside the helicopter.

The sedation was the most important part of the rescue, because if the mule woke up during the air ride, the animal would most likely have panicked on the helicopter. That potential scenario could have been fatal for everyone involved.

Thankfully the aircraft landed easily, with the sleeping mule blissfully unaware of what was going on. The animal, now named Hope is currently recovering in a hospital.
