One woman who traveled to Peru came back with a memento she wasn’t counting on – flesh eating maggots.

She’d started to experience headaches on her return trip to England and not long after started to experience severe, shooting facial pains.

She also became aware of scratching sounds inside her head.

When she woke up one morning to a fluid-soaked pillow she decided it was time to go to the hospital where doctors initially thought she’d contracted an ear infection.

Imagine her shock and horror when she was informed she’d contracted a case of maggot infestation.

Oh, and that they had eaten a half-inch hole in her ear canal.

She believes after walking through a swarm of bugs she became host to some New World Screwworm Flies.

A potentially deadly parasite, the screwworm is capable of burrowing through and killing living tissue.

After a first removal attempt failed, and a potential brain occupation scare, the maggots were all successfully removed.

The patient reported that she’s had no long-term repercussions and is no longer fearful of bugs.
