One Mercedes-Benz recently sold for over $29.5 million at Bonhams Goodwood Sale.

The 1954 W196 Formula 1 single-seater was driven by Argentinian racer, Juan Manuel Fangio for not one, but two Grand Prix victories. That car is now a world record breaker for ‘most valuable Formula 1 racing car ever sold, most valuable motor car ever sold at auction and the most valuable Mercedes-Benz’.

The chairman of Bonhams stated “It was a personal privilege to preside over the sale of this vehicle, which is not only one of the most significant motor cars of the 20th century, but also the most important historic Grand Prix racing car ever offered for sale."

The silver vehicle did receive a fresh coat of paint, but other than that, the car remains the same in visual appearance as it did nearly 60 years ago. The unidentified buyer made the winning bid over the phone.

The car’s design served as a sort of model guideline in which subsequent Formula 1 racing vehicles followed.
