USA: reactions to George Zimmerman’s acquittal
On Saturday George Zimmerman left the Sanford courtroom a free man. The neighbourhood- watch volunteer from Florida was acquitted of the 2012 murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin. The case has revived fierce debate about racial profiling in the US and the outcome of the trial has sparked an avalanche of comments on social networks.
Some web users are convinced Zimmerman shot the teenager in legitimate self-defense and have hailed the verdict. The brother of the accused, Robert, has posted a message to Twitter saying he is proud to be American.
Others however have said the ruling is a disgrace to the US legal system. Many web users, including the victim’s father, Tracy Martin, took to the web and the streets voicing their deception, disappointment and outrage upon hearing the ruling.
And with many youths now seeking revenge, saying they want Zimmerman dead, leaders of the black community, like Reverend Jesse Jackson for example have posted messages on Twitter appealing for calm, and urging followers not to express their anger through violence.
The nation’s oldest and largest civil rights group, the NAACP is conveying a similar message, and has also responded with a call to action, petitioning the US Department of Justice to seek justice for Trayvon Martin by filing civil rights charges agains... Go on reading on our web site.
