In May of this year, law enforcement authorities in China busted an underground market that was selling long expired chicken feet, tripe and throat. Some of the poultry pieces dated back to 1967. They were treated with hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals to make the feet look white and to kill bacteria. With the chemical laden process, the smugglers were able to increase the sizes of the chicken portions.

In total, 22 tons of the expired meat were discovered during a raid. The chicken parts are commonly shipped to China along with other foods like fruits and veggies.

Law enforcement authorities involved in the raid claimed the odor and filthy conditions were overwhelming. The chemical process used in the chicken did not kill the stench.

Although the poultry was seized, police have warned that incidents involving poor quality food products are still common, as smugglers keep finding creative ways to get expired chicken across the border.
