Researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain have found that having three pints of beer, or three medium size glasses of wine a week can impair your brain function by up to 20 percent.

Researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain have found that having three pints of beer, or three medium size glasses of wine a week in a single sitting once a week can impair your brain function by up to 20 percent.
Emily Robinson, director of the campaign group Alcohol Concern, told the Daily Mail: “This shows why we need to change the culture where it’s seen as the norm to drink excessively at university. Binge-drinking carries lots of risks in terms of the immediate safety of students, but also in terms of their future health and the likelihood of developing an alcohol problem later in life.”

Over three years, the researchers compared students who drank the equivalent of six units of alcohol in one sitting at least once a week with students who rarely drank at all.

The results of the study show that while there was little difference in speed and accuracy, the drinker’s brains had to work harder for the same results as the non drinkers.

The participants that didn’t drink had their brain activity peak at 18 micorovolts, and the drinkers started out at 20 microvolts and reached a peak of 22 microvolts after the three year study.
