President Andrew Jackson and the removal of the Native Americans

As the population of the white American increased, the Native Americans found themselves pushed further and further to the West. Jackson forcefully relocated the natives to make way for the white Americans. His ultimatum to the natives was either they assimilate into the white American culture or they move out. (Note the similarity of the ultimatum then to today's "war on terror", where GW Bush declared, "You're either with us or against us.")

This ultimatum given to the Native American Indians caused much hardship. Many of them relocated and many died during the migration due to lack of transportation means. The majority of the American public then were aloof to this genocide. It was this event that set the precedence and tone for the future relocation of non-whites - even up to the last century. The relocation of Japanese after the Pearl Harbour attack triggered no outcry from the American public.
