Egypt: online reactions to Mohamed Morsi’s removal
Military coup or Egyptian revolution? President Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military on Wednesday night, and the news has been met with widespread and mixed reactions from Egyptian web users.
The ex-head of state took to the presidency’s official Twitter page soon after being kicked out of power, urging the people to reject what he described as a “full coup”: his supporters have also taken to social networks with feelings of bitterness, saying Mohamed Morsi was the country’s first democratically elected president.
But the countless web users posting under the hashtag "#EgyptRevolutionNotMilitaryCoup" certainly don’t agree, and stress that it’s all the Egyptians who have taken part in protests in recent days, and not the army, that have forced the Islamists from power. Referring to a “second revolution” which these Egyptians feel was necessary in view of the authoritarian tendencies of Mohamed Morsi’s government.
And whilst some are hailing what they consider to be a second chance for Egyptian democracy, others are calling for vigilance as the army is back on the political scene…
The site Morsi Timer, which was displaying a countdown to the expiration of the ultimatum Mohamed Morsi was given by the army, is now showing a 90 ... Go on reading on our web site.
