Avatar est un film américain de science-fiction appartenant au genre planet opera, écrit, réalisé et tourné par le Canadien James Cameron pouvant être regardé en relief 3D, sorti en Europe le 16 décembre 2009 et en Amérique du Nord le 18 décembre 2009.
L’action se déroule en 21541 sur Pandora, une des lunes de Polyphème, une planète géante gazeuse en orbite autour d'Alpha Centauri A. L’exolune, recouverte d’une jungle luxuriante, est le théâtre du choc entre des humains, venus exploiter un minerai rare susceptible de résoudre la crise énergétique sur Terre, et la population autochtone, les Na’vis, qui vivent en parfaite osmose avec leur environnement et tentent de se défendre face à l’invasion militarisée. Un programme est créé par les terriens, le programme Avatar, qui va leur permettre de contrôler des corps Na’vi clonés associés à des gènes humains, afin de s’insérer dans la population et de tenter de négocier avec elle, dans la mesure où le clan Omaticaya est installé dans un gigantesque arbre maison situé sur un des principaux gisements de ce minerai dénommé Unobtainium. Le personnage central de l’histoire est Jake Sully, un marine paraplégique qui, via son avatar, va devoir choisir son camp avec pour enjeu, le destin de la planète.
Plot
The story takes place on the Pandora, a moon of a far away planet, in the year 2154. The movie opens with Jake getting into a fight in a bar on Earth before he goes to Pandora. Pandora is a fictional Earth-like moon in a distant planetary system. Some humans have traveled from Earth to Pandora because it is a source of a very valuable mineral called unobtanium. The largest deposit of the mineral is under a large tree that the local Na'vi people have named "Hometree" (kelutral in the Na'vi language). The tree is very important to the Na'vi. Parker Selfridge (played by Giovanni Ribisi) is the military leader of the mining operation. He uses marines for security. The marines need to move the Na'vi people before they can start mining the unobtanium. They have tried to do this many times. They have offered the Na'vi clothing, education, and such, but none has been working. Their next plan is to just blow the place up.
Aim and inspiration
If Cameron was inspired by every science fiction book he read when he was a kid, the look of the Na'vi was inspired by a dream that Cameron's mother had before he wrote Avatar. She dreamt about a 12-foot-tall blue woman and he thought that image was cool. Cameron's aim was to make us think about how we interact with nature and others . Cameron said: "the Na'vi represent(...) our higher selves, or our aspirational selves..." and the humans represent "the parts of ourselves that are trashing our world and maybe condemning ourselves to a grim future
