Thousands of people are missing in Uttarakhand, where floods unleashed by early and unusually heavy monsoon rains show no sign of abating.

The flood waters have claimed more than 800 lives in the north Indian state.

Tens of thousands have been forced to flee their homes.

Among those whose fate is still unknown are the parents of Meenakshi Patel.

"They had come out of the temple. They called me and said they had visited the temple. That was the last conversation we had. There is no information about them and they can't be contacted."

Government officials put the number of missing at 350 but agree the figure was probably far higher.

Heavy rains have been hampering evacuation and search and rescue efforts by the army and air force.
