A serious investigation of several cases of hiccups and vocal tics is happening at two different schools in Massachusetts.
The investigation includes students from Essex Agricultural and Technical School in Danvers, Massachusetts and North Shore Technical High in Middleton. Between 12 and 24 students have reported having chronic hiccups or vocal tics this past school year.

Thousands of local doctors have been contacted in an effort to find “correlations between the symptoms and the students” that could have caused the hiccup outbreak while the State looks into possible environmental factors.

The symptoms remain unexplained so far.

Reports say that “Based on the observation and air measurements taken during the building investigations conducted at Essex Agricultural and Technical High School to date, no environmental factors that would be most likely attributed to significant neurological effects have been detected.”

One theory about the hiccups is that they are being caused by mass hysteria, which has occurred in Danvers before during the time of the Salem witch hunts.
