According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a six-foot wave that that happened in the Atlantic, and hit the Jersey Coast on June 13th was actually a rare kind of tsunami.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a six foot wave that formed in the Atlantic, and hit the Jersey Coast on June 13th was actually a rare kind of tsunami.

Researchers are unsure if it was caused by seismic activity, like most tsunamis, or if it was actually a meteotsunami caused by weather conditions.

It could have been caused by a shift in the Continental Shelf off the coast of New Jersey, or a windstorm that swept through the area.

There were multiple reports of tsunami like waves and tide gauges all the way from North Carolina to Massachusetts.

One report of the tsunami by a spear fisherman in Barnegat Inlet said: “This wave occurred in conjunction with a reversal of the current such that even though the tide was going out, a strong surge was entering the inlet.”

The incident lasted for about five minutes, and at least two divers were reportedly injured to the point of needing medical attention.
