(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLICE SPOKESMAN, MICKY ROSENFELD, SAYING:

"A security guard from a private company fired shots at an Israeli man, a 46-year-old, who was injured seriously. All of this incident took place after the Israeli man, the 46-year-old, shouted 'Allahu Akbar, Allah is great' which led the security guard to think that an incident, an attack was going to take place."

The incident occurred as hundreds gathered for prayer in one of Jerusalem's most contested and sensitive religious sites.

Authorities are currently investigating what caused the man to use the phrase, one that is often shouted by Islamist militants before mounting attacks.
