Indian police arrest three men over tourist rape

Police search a truck they believe was used to abduct a 30-year-old American woman, who was later gang raped near the Indian resort town of Manali.

On Thursday, investigators said they had arrested three men in their early 20s suspected of being involved in the case.

The woman, who has not been identified, was reportedly picked up by the three men in a truck as she tried to hitch hike back to her guest house Monday night.

Officers are questioning the suspects, said the district superintendent, but will only charge the men after they are identified by the victim.

He added that they have strong evidence the three are guilty.

The case has thrown fresh scrutiny on India's high rate of sex crimes against women.

Several tourists have been targeted following the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old Delhi woman in December, who died of her injuries.

The incident prompted national outcry and put pressure on politicians to do more to protect Indian women.
