SPENDING 12 hours a day hunched over a cold riverbed searching for flecks of gold isn't everyone's idea of the perfect job. But for Vincent Thurkettle it was so alluring he ditched a stable £50,000-a-year civil service role to become a full-time prospector. He now travels the world scouring rivers for gold - including Japan, Italy, California, New Zealand, Pyrenees, Arctic Lapland and the UK. On a good day, Vince estimates he can earn up to £200, with his treasure hunting activities potentially generating millions if he strikes lucky.
