A 5-year-old little girl in Lake Charles, Louisiana enjoys reading to herself. The kindergartner has reportedly completed 875 books during the school year.
Sophia Moss’ father, named Carl explained her fascination stating “It started with Elmo, and then we had a DVD of Hooked on Phonics and she just loved it and started watching it at 2-and-a-half years old. She learned her phonics, so we did sight words, and then we went to the LeapFrog books that we got at Wal-Mart. Short vowels, long vowels, and probably by 3-and-a-half she was sight reading and doing small, small sentences.”
The librarian at Sophia’s elementary school worked with the family for encouragement, sometimes sending the child home with 10 books a day to keep up with her obsession. Right now, Sophia’s favorite series is the Curious George line up.
By the end of kindergarten, most kids can just recognize and write both upper and lower case letters.
