Washington D.C. is transforming a historic and iconic hospital into a commercial enterprise. The east campus of St. Elizabeths will undergo a complete makeover with the potential to re-energize the entire neighborhood.

Originally built in the 1850s, it’s now being morphed into a pavilion which will house retail shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities. In total, the cost of renovating this particular campus is priced at approximately $5 million.

The pavilion’s official unveiling is scheduled for the late summer of 2013 after workers from the Department of Homeland Security take over the west campus of St. Elizabeths, which will serve as the department’s national headquarters. The grounds of the former hospital take up about 350 acres, meaning the opportunity to bring additional businesses on the property will boost the local economy.

A Washington developer who is looking at project opportunities in the area stated “It hasn’t been appreciated enough for its advantages. And St. Elizabeths is probably one of the most beautiful set of buildings in the city.”
