A US soldier is to plead guilty to killing 16 Afghans to avoid the death penalty. The killings in 2012 remain one of the worst atrocities of the Afghan war and created such anger in the country that the US temporarily halted combat operations. Both the army and the victims' relatives have demanded that Robert Bales be executed.
