A recent poll concerning religious beliefs around the world revealed that about 13 percent of the 50 thousand people questioned define themselves as atheists.

Most of them live in China, Japan, the Czech Republic, and France.

Of those polled, 29 percent of French citizens were strong in their non-beliefs, and 30 to 47 percent of the remaining three top countries said no to a higher power.

The US showed 5 percent of the respondents to be atheist, less than the world average.

Among the most pious, is Ghana with 96 percent saying they are religious, followed closely by Nigeria at 93 percent, and Armenia and Fiji at 92 percent.

The poll didn’t inquire about specific worship habits, just whether the individual considered themselves to be “religious,” “not religious” or “convinced atheist.”

Outing yourself as an atheist, however, is much more than a casual polling response in some areas.

Seven countries consider it a capital offense - Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan.

Seven states in the US can prohibit atheists from taking public office. They are Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
