Prime Minister David Cameron cut short a visit to France as news broke of the killing of a British soldier on the streets of London in broad daylight.
The soldier was hit by a car then hacked to death by two men shouting Islamic slogans.

"It is the most appalling crime. We obviously are urgently seeking - and the police are urgently seeking - the full facts about this case but there are strong indications that it is a terrorist incident."
Emergency national security meetings have been taking place in the wake of the attack.
Home Secretary Theresa May said it was an assault on the whole nation.

"This attack was an attack on everyone in the United Kingdom and it will be condemned by people from every community."
London Mayor Boris Johnson described the killing as barbaric.
