Hibernate mode was created so it would save the current state of your computer to your hard disk. Then, your computer could turn off and when it started again it would reload all of the data it had loaded when it started hibernating, good as new. It's almost like waking up from a deep sleep or from... you get the picture. The hibernate feature, however, uses a lot of disk space.
