What are you doing on November 21st? Well, if you have yet to plan a movie night let me suggest a reboot thats waited 3 years to hit the big screen. I had a chance to screen the re-make of the cult classic Red and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't half bad. Now, you must know this disclaimer: I did not see the original beforehand, so I came into this movie with much lower expectations than some of you might have going in.
I will start with the bad news. The film is about a group of home grown kids call themselves "Wolverines" who band together to save the modern day United States from a Korean political take over. If you are asking yourself, "whaaaat?" you should, because we all pretty much sleep peacefully knowing that that is about as likely as Princess Leia being transformed into a Disney Princess...Oh wait....that actually might happen, but the Korean US invasion thing, probably WONT. Also, watching a dozen kids try and believably defeat an entire foreign military is kinda out there, so you have to go into this knowing that you should buy a large bag of suspension of disbelief when you purchase that movie popcorn.
However...this is where the good news comes in...thanks to director Dan Bradley, there are some killer action scenes, pun intended, and if you don't go for the less than stellar plot, you should at least go for the crazy stunts and action sequences. You will not be disappointed there. Also, while the reviews haven't been epic, I enjoyed the acting in this movie overall. I think all of the kids were talented, although, I would have cast Josh Peck as one of the first kids to get killed off, because he was a bit strange to be carrying this film as the lead. He tries reallllly hard, so hard that you find yourself laughing in moments that should elicit sadness. And when theres a girl in the audience who cries every year at the end of the super bowl, laughing during your moments of sorrow, you're in trouble.
Why should you go? Well, Chris Hemsworth is great in this, Adrienne Palicki is surprisingly strong, and the action scenes are really fun to watch and If you're a fan of the cult classic, you will appreciate some of the script nods to the original. There are also quite a few comedic moments that will made you lol, if you're into that sort of thing.
Overall, I give this movie a B-, and if I remember correctly, that's still qualifies it for the AB Honor Roll bumper sticker, right?
