Despite competition from the Olympic games in London and some theatergoers still wary about stepping into movie theaters, The Dark Knight Rises managed to hold the top spot bringing in $64 million in its second weekend.
Though the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy took a substantial hit on Friday due to the opening ceremonies in London, the film managed to bounce back strong on Saturday. Still down sixty percent from its opening weekend, The Dark Knight Rises managed a 10-day total of $289 million, the third highest for a film behind The Dark Knight and The Avengers. It will also become the third fastest film to reach $300 million behind the same films. A strong international showing brings the worldwide cume to $537.2 million.
Outside the Olympics, The Dark Knight Rises had little competition for the weekend with the two wide releases unable to connect with audiences. The Watch starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill managed a third place finish behind Ice Age 4 with only a $13 million while Step Up Revolution danced to a 4th place finish with $11.8 million. The biggest competition for The Caped Crusader will come this Friday when the Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel hits theaters.
So did you make it to the theater this weekend to see The Dark Knight Rises for the first or maybe fifth time or was your Olympic fever too much to get you away from TV?
