Star Wars fans are still abuzz at the announcement that Disney will be buying LucasFilm and releasing a new Star Wars film in 2015, but what story can we expect to see on the big screen? We've got some info that could shine a little light on what it could be...and what it isn't.
The announcement that Disney was purchasing LucasFilm was one of the most surprising in recent memory and there's been a lot of rumors and speculation regarding what the future holds for the Star Wars Universe. We know for sure that Disney is planning to release not one, but at least three new films that will take place sometime after the events of Return of the Jedi.
Many fans have speculated that the most logical storyline would be that of the "Thrawn Trilogy" from writer Timothy Zahn. The plot takes place five years after Episode Six and focuses on Luke Skywalker setting out to rebuild the Jedi order and a new threat trying to rebuild the Empire and destroy the New Republic. A source tell E! Online that the next trilogy will NOT be based on the Thrawn Trilogy or any other Star Wars book, graphic novel or video game, but instead be a completely original storyline that we've never seen or read before.
Considering it's been almost thirty years since the release of Jedi and most of the original cast are in their 60's and 70's, we don't see the next trilogy taking place five years later unless they recast with younger actors. If the original cast and characters are included, we anticipate their ages being dealt with and the timeframe taking place closer to thirty years after the original trilogy. Whatever the storyline ends up being, Lucas will still have his stamp on the project. Lucas has stated that he has written the treatment for Episodes 7 through 9 and he will remain as a creative consultant on the films. Episode 7 will hit theaters in 2015 with additional movies opening every two or three years after.
In addition to a new trilogy, other films are also being planned that will expand the Star Wars Universe even further. Some of these films could be standalone movies focusing on individual characters, similar to what Marvel has done with their superhero characters like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. So in theory, we could see a Han Solo or Boba Fett origin story on the big screen one day. Lucas stated that there's enough material to have Star Wars movies for the next 100 years and you can be sure Disney will want to release as many as will help them make back that $4 billion it cost for the rights.
So are you excited at the prospects of more Star Wars movies on the horizon and what timeframe should the next trilogy take place in? Give us your theories below or tweet us @ClevverMovies. I'm Psylocke, thanks for watching
