'Cleopatra' loses a director and you'll never guess who 's on deck!
Historical epic 'Cleopatra,' developed by Columbia Pictures for Angelina Jolie, aims to show the more serious side of the famous historical figure. Jolie told the Telegraph that Cleo "has been very misunderstood," and this new take on her life will try to reveal "a different truth about her as a pharaoh... and not as a sex symbol." The script will be adapted by Eric Roth, who wrote 'Munich,' 'and 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,' so yeah, this guy can handle the heavy material. Last we heard, David Fincher was in talks to direct, but now he's left the building and Ang Lee may be stepping up to the plate.
Vulture reports that the studio is definitely "seeking other candidates" to replace Fincher, and Lee is on the shortlist. Best known for 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'Hulk', Lee hasn't had a hit since 'Brokeback Mountain' became an Oscar favorite in 2005. If you've been to the movies lately, you may have seen the somewhat baffling trailer for his upcoming 'Life of Pi,' which tells the story of an Indian zookeeper's son shipwrecked with a menagerie of animals, including a full-grown tiger.
So Ang Lee has a pretty unusual body of work -- does that make him a good fit for this unconventional retelling of the Cleopatra story? Or if not, who would you like to see in the director's chair? Let us know what you think down in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe to ClevverMovies to stay in the loop! I'm Erin Darling, thanks for tuning in!
