FRONTLINE: The Old Man and the Storm | Clip 2 "No ...
http://www.pbs.org/frontline/katrina One year after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans' bankrupt utility had yet to bring power back to areas of the lower Ninth Ward—including the home of Herbert Gettridge. In "The Old Man and the Storm," FRONTLINE follows Mr. Gettridge and his family as they struggle to rebuild their homes and their lives. Watch on air and online beginning Tues, Jan 6, 2009. Six months after Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, producer June Cross came across 82-year-old Herbert Gettridge working alone on his home in the lower Ninth Ward, a neighborhood devastated when the levees broke in August 2005. Over the next two years, Cross would document the story of the extended Gettridge clan--an African-American family with deep roots in New Orleans--as they struggled to rebuild their homes and their lives. Their efforts would be deeply impacted by larger decisions about urban planning, public health, and the insurance industry, by the decisions of policymakers about federal funding for rebuilding the Gulf, and state and city plans for dispersing those monies. The moving personal story of Mr. Gettridge and his family reveals the human cost of this tragedy, the continued inadequacies of government's response in the aftermath of Katrina, and how race, class, and politics have affected the attempts to rebuild this American city.

P.O.V. | Campaign by Kazuhiro Soda | PBS
Broadcast Date: July 29, 2008 http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/campaign This is democracy — Japanese style. "Campaign" provides a startling insider’s view of Japanese electoral politics in this portrait of a man plucked from obscurity by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to run for a critical seat on a suburban city council. Kazuhiko "Yama-san" Yamauchi's LDP handlers are unworried that he has zero political experience, no charisma, no supporters, and no time to prepare. What he does have is the institutional power of Japan's modern version of Tammany Hall pushing him forward. Yama-san allows his life to be turned upside down as he pursues the rituals of Japanese electioneering — with both tragic and comic results. A co-presentation with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM). Find out more about this film: http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/campaign P.O.V. Broadcast Date: June 24, 2008 http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/tracesofthetrade/ First-time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery - her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade: from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba. Step by step, they uncover the vast extent of Northern complicity in slavery while also stumbling through the minefield of contemporary race relations. In this bicentennial year of the U.S. abolition of the slave trade, "Traces of the Trade" offers powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide.
