Speed Painting of Rihanna: Oil Paint, Color Pencils, Markers
My process 1.) Sketch 2.) Illustration Markers 3.) Color Pencils and 4.) Oil paint. Sometimes I add even more steps with Photoshop, but I didnt for this portrait. I wanted to see how far I could push oil paint as a medium. I prefer painterly realism to photorealism (photo realistic stuff gets boring.....whats the point of simply reproducing a picture?). I was satisfied with the results, despite my unorthodox approach to making this....(painting? work of art? mixed media?....I dont know what to call it.) The markers were Prismacolor and Chartpak Ad. The color pencils were Prisma and the oil paint was Old Holland, Maimeri, Vasari, Bloxx, Grumbacher and Holbein Colors. I used Liquin as a paint medium. I used Flat, Round and Filbert Brushes and occasionally a fan brush (for delicate blending). This time lapse speed portrait consolidated four hours in to less than four minutes.

Santa Claus Gets Arrested: Artwork by Merrill Kazanjian
Lets face it. Santa was asking for it........ The man: 1.) "Breaks and enters" illegally over a billion times each year........ on Jesus' birth day. 2.) Depends on exploitative labor of people under three feet tall. 3.) Could be the cause of the Polar ice caps melting. 4.) Flies without a license and at his own leisure.....while the rest of us get frisked and go through metal detectors before flying. Could the north pole be harboring terrorists? Anyway.....Its the holiday season....so....... I created an artwork of Mr. Santa Claus getting arrested for all of his transgressions. I started out with a pencil drawing (regular #2 pencil. Then I added a layer of marker. I followed the layer of marker with a layer of color pencil. After the color pencil, I added oil paint and liquin. Finally, I scanned the image and did touch ups in Paint Shop Pro 9. Happy Holidays from Merrill Kazanjian

New Art Techniques- Mineral Spirits and Color Pencil
Today, I am going to demonstrate a new artistic technique. I am going to merge the best qualities of two artistic mediums; oil painting and color pencil. What you are now watching is a time lapse of me building up layers of illustration marker and color pencil over a pencil drawing. In about a minute, I will slow the video down to show you that color pencils can be blended by using mineral spirits and a paint brush. I am doing this artwork on 110 lb. bond paper and please note that this method will not work as well on simple 20 lb. printer paper. This drawing was done as a tribute to Manhattanville Colleges iconic History Professor- Mr. Lawson Bowling. Professor Bowling is a mentor and friend of mine. He just completed his 25th year of service at Manhattanville College. It is an honor to give him this drawing and possibly turn him in to an internet celebrity. The best quality of oil painting is that you can 1.) Blend while the paint is wet and 2.) Add multiple layers of new paint after the previous layer dries. The greatest nuance of color pencil drawing is the accuracy that is attained by using the very fine point at the tip of the pencil. I dip the paintbrush in to the mineral spirits and then dab it on a paper towel; then I drag the brush over my drawing. The mineral spirits quickly break down the thick cake of color pencil. The soft tip of the paint brush allows me to move and blend the pigment from the color pencil in a manner that is similar to the process of painting. It takes only a few minutes for the mineral spirits and pencil to dryAfter the mineral spirits dry, you can add more layers of color pencil. I have actually finished an oil painting with color pencil and an oil paint medium called liquin before, but to save time, I built up the flesh tones today with markers and color pencil. by Merrill Kazanjian http://merrillk.com
Bart Simpson- Stop Motion Art
A Stop Motion drawing/collage of Bart Simpson made with jelly beans, red M&M's, chocolate chips and lentils. It took over two hours and 300 photographs to create. I edited and created this movie using Roxio Media Creator 10- Videowave 8. Created by Merrill Kazanjian
Illustration Techniques- Marker and Color Pencil
This video shows my process for making an illustration (non tradigital). I use illustration markers (usually prismacolor) and color pencils (usually prisma once again) and a wax blending stick. I make my illustrations in two steps. Step 1- I observe my reference drawings or photos and try to see what lies beneath. There is no way to blend markers in the same way that one can blend paint (ironically even with a marker blender) so I lie down the base tones with markers (the first layer). Step 2- Is created with color pencils. Color pencils are mixable / blendable and I mix the color pencils directly above my marker drawing. I use the wax stick to finish the surface and tie everything together. - Merrill Kazanjian

Stop Motion Drawing
Today, I used a scanner to document the different stages of this drawing. It was made with color pencils and illustration markers. Every few minutes, I took a high resolution scan to show the progress of my work. I started out with a pencil drawing and then used illustration markers to develop the undertones (or as they say in painting- the underpainting. Next, I used color pencils to build transparent to opaque layers atop the layer of illustration markers. Thank you for watching the video. MASTER Drawing the Eye in 2 Minutes (Fear and Surprise)
Today I have two minutes to teach you how to draw the expression of fear in the human eye. I will demonstrate the process step by step and I will try to make it totally painless. Dont be scared, this is what you have to look for- Notice that a fearful eye features a distinct gap between the iris and the top eyelid. This separation is about one fifth the height of the eye. The shape of the eye is slightly taller than a calm eye with a higher arching rainbow on the top eyelid. The bottom eyelid has become more flexed and is hugging the eyeball more than in the calm eye. The biggest difference is the distance between the eyebrow and the eye. The muscles of the forehead pull the eyebrow upwards. The skin between the eyebrow and the eye resembles the tightness of skin tight clothing. The viewer can see the bony area at the top of the eye socket and the rounded shape of the top of the eyeball (which can lead to extreme shadows depending upon the lighting). Remember if you want a print version of this lesson, go to my website Merrillk.com and type in fearful eye in the search box in the upper left corner. Thanks for watching the video!....Merrill Kazanjian
MASTER Drawing an Angry Eye in 2 Minutes
Try to notice that the shape around an angry eye is much more compressed than a calm eye. When a person is enraged, the muscles around the eye tighten and pull the eyelids inward. This creates deeper shadows and uncovers more of the white of the eye. In the angry eye there is a separation between the top of the iris and the eyelid. Step 1- Draw a circle with a rainbow shape above it. Remember to leave a space about half of the size of the iris in between the upper lid and upper iris. Step 2- Draw in the shape of the eyebrow. Make sure that it is angled downwards towards the inner corner of the eye. It should actually connect with the eye lashes on the upper eye lid Step 3- Draw in the pupil and the lower eyelid. Leave a black space in the pupil for a reflection. The lower eyelid should graze the bottom of the iris. Step 4- The bottom eyelid is literally wrapped around the eyeball. Make a bowl like shape below the eye and add a squiggly line on the inner corner of the eye to hint at the side of the nose. Step 5- Shade the pupil and iris and the upper eye lashes. Please note that the upper eyelashes are thicker and fuller than the bottom ones. Step 6- Shade in the eyebrow. Please notice that it is not evenly shaded throughout. Step 7- Darken the area around the eye but do not touch the white area. The eyes seem to sink in more when a person is angry, creating deeper shadows. Merrill Kazanjian
MASTER Drawing an Eye in 2 MINUTES
A helpful trick with observational drawing is to see things as shapes. The basic shape of the human eye is similar to an almond shape. But this is only one of the several shapes that encompass the eye. Think of these shapes as puzzle pieces as you draw a persons eye in the near future. Remember that these shapes will slightly change based upon a persons facial expression. Today, I will show you step by step how to draw the human eye. Pause the video at any time if you need to. Here we go. Step 1: Make a rainbow shape with a circle under it. The top of the circle should be partially blocked by the rainbow. Step 2: Make the bottom lid. Notice that the lower part of the almond shape narrows as it approaches the tear duct on the inner corner of the eye. Step 3: Make the pupil and leave an empty space in the middle for a reflection. The line above, is the eye lid folded back. Step 4: Add the shape of the eyebrow. Step 5: Add a light line below the eye to hint at the eye socket. Step 6: Shade in the eyebrows. Try to notice that they are not one solid shape. Step 7: Add the eyelashes. Try to notice that they are much thicker on the top eye lid. Step 8: Add the final shading. The darkest areas should be directly under the eyebrow and under the eye. I hope that this video helped you. If you still need help go to merrillk.com and download a print version of this lesson.
