On October 17, 2012 Adams County District 12 Five Star School teachers were protesting a 2% pay reduction to cover the mandated increases to their retirement fund. While interviewing some teachers, I met Lori Goldstein, a non-teacher protesting her teacher pay for not teaching. She is actually getting paid with tax dollars meant for students to organize for the teacher union. This practice is common place in Colorado and across the country. Every dollar spent on the union is a dollar not spent on a student. This video was originally posted on youtube and received 586 views in 4 days.
JeffCo Superintendent Cindy Stevenson admits that meeting mandated PERA requirements are negotiable at the local level. "It's a matter of cash flow" JeffCO has CHOSEN not to have employees pick up their additional PERA contribution requirements. Instead, these costs keep getting passed off to taxpayers. But don't worry, it's in the budget. How about JeffCO puts teacher jobs and critical expenses back in the budget and take PERA and their wasteful spending out of the budget.
JeffCo Public School's COO, Steve Bell, admits that he designed the school's debt finance model to go to the voters every 4-6 years and ask for tax increases to pay for "Critical Needs." Critical Needs are not in the budget. This was done with intent. It was not arbitrary. Stop the madness. No more bailouts. Restore fiscal sanity. Put critical needs and teacher jobs back in the budget. Take PERA out! Vote No on 3A and 3B and put students first.
