Today we look at an exciting fight on the undercard of UFC 86 in the 185-pound Middleweight class, as Patrick “The Predator” Cote will battle Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida. The winner of this fight is rumored to be in line for a title shot. Cote is a winner of 6 of his last 7 matches with 3 straight wins by TKO. At UFC 74, Cote was impressive in his dominating TKO victory over Kendall Grove. Cote is great on his feet and packs a powerful punch. “The Predator” stated he is ready for whatever Almeida brings him but expects the “Big Dog” to try and get him on the mat. Experts around the sport question Cote’s skills on the mat and point to a quick submission loss to Travis Lutter in 2 minutes 18 seconds during the first round of the Ultimate Fighter 4 finale in November of 2006. Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter and is a rock solid ground specialist. He sports an overall MMA record of 9 wins and only 2 defeats, and he is currently riding a 7-match win streak. Almeida has stated the goal is to take down Cote and to win by submission. He has been working feverishly in the tape room - studying Cote - and is looking for weaknesses in his opponent’s game. This is “Big Dog’s” second fight back since taking a 3-year retirement from the sport to run his Jiu-Jitsu school. Oddsmakers have listed Patrick Cote the slight favorite at minus-130 and Ricardo Almeida the underdog is listed at even money.

Last time out Kazmir struggled with his command in his no decision against the Red Sox. He is having trouble getting his slider over for strikes and opposing hitters are sitting on the fastball. The Rays are a 19-19 team on the road. Big Sidney Ponson will have to bounce back after an awful start last time out against the Rangers where he surrendered 7 runs, 9 hits and 3 walks over 5 innings. Tampa got to the right-hander for 5 earned runs and 12 hits in only 5 innings of work during their meeting on May 26th. The Yankee bats heated up in June as they batted over .280 as a team during the month. Bet on the offense here and the play is over 9 ½ runs.

Martinez is becoming discouraged over his performance but he will continue to battle on. He is wondering if he is tipping off his pitches to opposing batters and will work in the film room to find out. Teams are batting .325 against the veteran right-hander this season. Eaton has pitched well over his last 8 starts with only 1 bad outing against the LA Angels mixed in. He has given up more than 3 earned runs in only 1 of his last 8 starts and it was against the Angels. The Phillies bullpen has pitched exceptionally well this season sitting with an ERA under 3 through 85 games. We can get 5 or 6 innings from Eaton we should be OK backing the Phils here with solid relief behind him. Take Philadelphia –130.

The lefthander has given up 7 earned runs in his 2 starts this season before beginning the year in the bullpen. He’s had 4 starts against the Cardinals the last few years and the redbirds hit .315 against him. The Cubs have not been good on the road this season sitting with a record of 18-24 through 42 games. Wellemeyer has gotten roughed up in his last 2 home starts surrendering 14 earned runs and 20 hits in 8 1/3rd innings of work. Wellemeyer had been experiencing elbow problems this season. The Cubs are averaging nearly 5 1/5 runs per game and Big Albert Pujols is back off the DL with the Cardinals. Bet on offense here and the play is over 9 runs.

Josh Beckett has pitched well over his last 3 starts giving up just 4 earned runs in 22 innings pitched. The Yankees sputtered a bit losing 3 of their last 4 prior to opening up their series with Boston. Rasner hasn’t been going very deep in games completing 5 innings or less over his last 4 starts and giving up 17 earned runs in only 18 2/3 rd’s innings of work. Becket owns 2 victories over the Yankees this season with an ERA under 4. We should get at least 7 strong innings from the Red Sox starter here and maybe even more based on the recent performance by the Red Sox bullpen. The play here is with the Red Sox at –125.

gamblerstelevision.com Young right-hander Justin Masterson will take the hill in the Saturday national TV game against the Yankees. This will be his first starts against the NY Yankees. He took the loss in the opener against Tampa lasting 6 innings and giving up 4 earned runs in the loss. Masterson has been better at home as he sits with an ERA about 1 ½ runs higher away from Fenway Park. Mike Mussina is pitching well for the pinstripers as he’s given up 3 earned runs or less in 11 of his last 13 starts. Mussina had great control this season sitting with a strikeout to walk ratio of just under 4-1. The Yankee bats came alive in June as they hit .282 for the month. The Play here is on the Yankees at –125.

On Showtime on Saturday night a fight in the Junior Welterweight division as Ricardo Torres behind a solid 32-1 record and 28 KO’s will face Kendall Holt who’s career record is 23-2. The American Fighter Holt is the –260 favorite with the Columbian Torres returning +200 as the underdog. This is a rematch of their fight last fall when Torres stopped Holt in the 11th round in Ricardo’s native Columbia. Many thought the stopping was premature but Holt was a bit wobbly and fell behind on the scorecards after being knocked to the ground by a Torres left hook. Torres only loss was to Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto. In that fight Torres sent Cotto to the mat in the third round. On Holt’s resume are losses to David Diaz and Thomas Davis. Davis a journeyman fighter sits with a record of 12-7. Davis lacks aggressiveness at times and Torres could steal rounds in this one should it go to the scorecards. Torres’ aggressive style and his KO success make him the play here at +200.

You have to feel pretty good about things right now if you are a St Louis Cardinals fan. St Louis will continue to contend as long of the starters continue to pitch as they did in the first half of the season. Mitchell Boggs take the hill for the red birds and the Cardinals are 4-0 behind him in 4 starts this season. They also score runs for the youngster as the Cards have averaged 7 runs scored behind Boggs. Mike Pelfrey has given up 10 earned runs over his last 16 1/3rd innings of work and has had issues with bases on balls. The right-hander allowed 9 walks in his last 2 starts. Teams are batting .303 against Pelfrey and he sits with a high WHIP of 1.65 on the season. WHIP measures walks and hits to innings pitched and high WHIP leads to big innings against pitchers. The Cardinals offense is coming around with Big Albert back and with some games under his belt. Play St Louis at –130.

Shorstop Rafael Furcal and infield Nomar Garciaparra return to the Dodgers lineup after an extended stay on the disabled list. The Jay’s during the years could put up runs on the board but finally their pitching came around and especially their bullpen where it sits with an ERA of 3.21 on the season. Gone are the days when their manager would ponder the possibility of starting games with their bullpen and finishing them with a starter. Jay’s starter Scott Kazmir has put up solid numbers on the season. Through 11 starts the lefthander sits with an ERA at 2.28 and opposing teams bat .192 against him. Heading into the season Kazmir is sitting with an ERA under 3 in 15 starts against Boston. This is Dice K’s third start since coming off the DL for an ailing shoulder and has pitched only 6 innings in 2 starts back. The Rays should get into the Red Sox bullpen in this one. Behind Kazmir, their potent offense and their solid 31-13 home record through 44 games play Tampa Bay at –115.

But since he has gotten it under 4 with a great 2 months of pitching. CC has only given up 21 earned runs over his last 13 starts. Jose Contreras has been tagged for 6 home runs over his last 2 starts and battled control issues last time out by throwing only 56 strikes in 100 pitches against the Cubs last time out. The Sox right-hander has given up 21 earned runs over his last 4 starts working 22 innings. Behind CC the play here is on Cleveland –125.
