Philippines: waging war on the people
Over 900 civilians have been assassinated in the Philippines since 2001 when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to power. The military and the police are clearly implicated, yet a climate of total impunity reigns. This is the "war on terrorism" Philippines-style. The film traces the story of one of the victims of this dirty war, Dr. Chandu Claver, and the ongoing international campaign to stop the killings in the Philippines. Dr. Chandu and his three daughters have now applied for refugee status in Canada. To be screened at Montreal Human Rights Film Festival on March 19, 2009 at 9pm (Cinéma du Parc EST 26min).
Philippines: Democracy that kills
Marie Boti and Malcolm Guy are working on a new film about the human rights situation in the Philippines, made urgent by the abduction of their friend, Maria Luisa Posa Dominado, Luing for short, on the island of Panay in April 2007. This 10-minute film is a work in progress featuring May Wan, the daughter of Luing, Fr. Joe Dizon and Lorena Santos, whose parents, Elisabeth Principe and Leo Velasco, were both abducted. Lorena's mother was surfaced and imprisoned at Camp Crame in Manila. Beth Principe was released in July 2009. Leo Velascso is still missing. The campaign recently re-launched by the Philippine women's group GABRIELA, Free our sisters! Free ourselves!, includes the call for the surfacing of Luing, as well as the release of Ruth Principe and another political prisoner, Angie Ipong, who is the sister of a friend in Toronto. The first Free Our Sisters! Free Ourselves! Campaign was run by GABRIELA in 1989. Its goal was the release of Luisa Posa, imprisoned at that time for fighting against the Marcos dictatorship, and her young daughter, May Wan. They were both detained in an Iloilo City jail, with May Wan as the youngest political prisoner in the Philippines. The campaign was successful. Malcolm Guy 22-10-09
Mirage of El Dorado - trailer
Mirage of El Dorado, the new film by Martin Frigon, will be released in August 2008 by Productions Multi-Monde. It takes us high into the Andes of northern Chile where Canadian-owned Barrick Gold, the biggest gold producer in the world, is set to move glaciers if necessary to get at the mineral riches beneath. The area borders on the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth, and many people in the Huasca Valley and beyond fear for their source of water and the glaciers that help supply it. The struggle around Pascua Lama is a David and Goliath confrontation with global consequences in an isolated region far from public scrutiny. More information at http://www.pmm.qc.ca
